Just a few years ago there were only 3 or 4 big artists’ book fairs in the UK each year. Now there seem to be at least 10. Here is a bit about the ones of which I have first-hand experience.

The International Contemporary Artists’ Book Fair. For 9 years it was in Halifax but is now in Leeds. When it moved to Leeds it became a two-day event. The space at the University of Leeds is big and beautiful and gets visitors on their way through to either the art gallery or the library.

Bristol Artist Book Event (BABE) is a weekend affair at the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol. 2007 was the first one and it plans to be every two years. It was incredibly well organised with a large staff of helpful volunteers and an interesting space.

Scissors Paper Stone at the London Print Studio was held for the first time this year. I don’t know if they plan to do it again.

This year the Phoenix Gallery in Brighton had a book fair to co-ordinate with an exhibition of artists’ books. I don’t know if they have plans for another.

The Small Publisher’s Fair is held in London near Holborn Tube Station.

The Manchester Artists Book Fair has been in September but this year is taking place in November to fill the gap of the missing LAB. Tom Sowden is no longer running it, which is a shame.

The London Artists Book Fair (LAB) was a huge event every year in November at the ICA near Trafalgar Square. The biggest artists book fair every year. It has changed organisers and is skipping 2008 and the new incarnation will be at the Whitechapel Gallery in London in 2009.

There are many other fairs that I haven’t been to. This was the first year for the Glasgow International Artist’s Book Fair and I didn’t make it and I still haven’t been to the big Oxford Fine Press Book Fair.
